We are looking for a Data Scientist to cover a 6 month parental leave.

Location: Remote, Europe timezone.

Position status: Part-time, up to 4 days/week, 6 month parental leave cover.

Salary: £48,000 + pension contributions per year for 4 days/week.

About Diagonal:

We are a data science consultancy, powered by our software. Our products are built for data science in the urban environment, to help understand the consequences of changes to our cities’ systems. We specialise in understanding large data and sensitive data. Our products unlock creativity, progress and better decisions in urban planning.

How we work is important to us. We work to uphold the right to the city, and approach projects with openness and transparency. We are making our software open source because we believe it is important that planning decisions don’t happen in a black-box.

Diagonal is a steward-owned company, which means we’re legally bound to both our mission and employee control in perpetuity. We are a startup that believes in sustainable growth. You can read our company charter here: diagonal.works/charter.

The role:

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of the built environment and responsible technology. We are a small, diverse team made up of individuals with various domain backgrounds and experience, which we see as a key strength. We work according to the principles of a Teal Organisation. That means we prioritise trust between team members and discussion based decision making. We value our supportive and inclusive culture. In addition to your work as a Software Engineer, there is space to define your role and involvement in different parts of the company.

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our team and help define and improve our urban data analysis tools. You will work closely with the rest of the team, but have significant control over your direction and approach. We take urban data science inspiration from books like Data Feminism, Design Justice, The Oregon Experiment and organisations like Gehl.

This position is currently part-time, up to 4 days/week, for 6 months.

We have an open mind in terms of what experience and background a successful candidate may bring. However, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Using, documenting, and filing bugs of our internal geospatial analytics Python API.
  • Working closely with our Engineering team to suggest new or improved features for our geospatial analytics engine.
  • Working with the team and clients/partners to collaboratively define, scope, and deliver urban analytics projects.
  • Finding data, wrangling data, and making sense of data - for projects or to evaluate how to integrate it into our internal geospatial analytics engine.
  • Work closely with our Design team to collaboratively build visual tools which provide transparency and insights into analysis.

A successful candidate will:

  • Have done geospatial analysis using Python.
  • Be able to read and understand Python (including some debugging), use Docker (maybe with some help from the Engineering team), and be comfortable learning new technology on the fly.
  • Be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary and collaborative team.
  • See transparency, reproducibility, and explainability as key parts of the role of a data scientist.
  • Understand the issues related to using data, algorithms and technology to shape the urban form.
  • Be optimistic about the positive impact technology can have on society, while having views on how to manage that impact responsibly.

(We are also hiring for a Software Engineer - Visualisation)

Benefits:

  • 29 days paid holiday (including UK public holidays.)
  • We are a remote-first company.
  • We have a flat team structure, allowing you to design your role and contribute to ways of working from day-one.
  • We support organisations that align with our goals. We are members of the ODI and OpenStreetMap. We will support membership to professional organisations of your choosing.
  • While the economics of our domain mean we can’t compete with big technology companies on compensation, we do offer meaningful employee control and ownership, capped compensation inequity across the company and considerable flexibility.

How to Apply:

To apply, send a cover letter and your CV to jobs@diagonal.works and include “Data Scientist (parental leave cover)” in the subject line. Please tell us why you are interested in this role, and how your experience would be a good fit.
